Tuesday 3rd January 2012

Post by thingo » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:09 pm

I've received an email from the Amaroo Neighbourhood House co-ordinator, and work is being done on the flooring. It will "affect" our booking for next Tuesday.

We could
  • - relocate for that evening to (possibly) Wadham House, next to the Mt Waverley library -- I can check if it is available;
  • - relocate elsewhere (make suggestions); OR
  • - cancel next Tuesday's session.
Please respond by Sunday evening, otherwise I'll take the first option, and report back here.

Hi,
Just need to let you know that we are having new floors put in at Amaroo starting 3rd January, this will affect your Tuesday booking for this week.
Happy New Year and sorry for any inconvenience.
Regards,

I've not yet managed to reach the co-ordinator of Wadham House, though I've left a message.

Wadham House is at 52 Wadham Parade, Mt Waverley 3149.
- from Mt Waverley railway station, it's to the left of, and behind the library, which faces you exiting from the Glen Waverley-bound platform;
- Melway reference is 70:e1 (or 61:e12), located pretty much under the "D" in "PDE";
- google map.

I'll post here, when I get confirmation.

Right.

Tomorrow's Billabong Boardgamers will be at Wadham House in Mt Waverley.
See my post above, for location details.

Please note, for the purpose, we will be guests of the Microbee User Group, MBUG.

The carpets will have been cleaned during the day, so we'll be on our best behaviour -- as always.

On a further note, I'd like to hear your comments about the venue, since I far prefer Wadham House, with carpet on the floor, which moderates the sound levels.

Kerrin,

Thanks for offering to do the Amaroo sign (maybe even with map | melways reference ? ). That will save me a few minutes.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all, since my departure last year.

edit: Please note: While there are quite a good number of spaces in the off street car park between the library and Wadham House, please be careful to park in the ones marked for "Wadham House Users", and not in those for the library staff. The parking officers for the city of monash are dynamite.

Andrea.

Any comments should be given weighting to those who attend most frequently, and I am not one of them. That said, some basic factors that might influence thinking:
  • Access to public transport - Vastly improved
  • Location, within 2.5kms of other venue, does not affect those who drive anyway
  • Venue facilities - Amaroo is quaint and dated, whilst historical for the group, it should not be the only reason to hang onto the past
  • Parking availability, at no cost
  • Costs
  • Reliable availablility for same time, same bat channel including special event days Easter, Anzac Day, other public holidays as applicable
  • Public Liability coverage
Not my part to answer these, nor am I seeking answers.

Not that I'm likely to attend all that often, but around the corner from Mt Waverly station (I go to the Lions op shop there once in a while) will save me about 15 minutes of walking.

Is Wadham House owned by one of the better private schools?

Wadham House was left, as part of a deceased estate, to the (then) city of waverley, as a neighbourhood house. It has a Committee of Management to operate the house, and manage the finances. The city provides maintenance people, and the free parking. [ See note above re not parking in the library spots. ]

It all works rather well.

See you all this evening.

I really like Wadham House:

- It is much quieter, due to carpet and curtains.
- The furniture is cleaner, better maintained, and most importantly: more comfortable.
- Wadham House has excellent airconditioning for summer, and very effective gas heaters for winter.
- There is a milk bar across the road, open until 7pm, and it is close to the shops at Hamilton Place.
- It will be easier to attract new people to Wadham House - many more people pass by, and it is close to public transport.
- We could promote Billabong with posters at the library, right next door.

Here's the result of my discussion with the co-ordinator of Wadham House.

We could meet every first Tuesday evening downstairs, which is available. ($15 per session.)

Though with 28 groups meeting at WH, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Tuesday evenings are out, upstairs and downstairs. Some days there are two groups, and on others, just one. (Sorry, I omitted to ask about the 5th Tuesday.)

There are no consistent weekday evening (nor Saturday, and EGF is on Sundays) slots available, even with alternating between downstairs and upstairs.

So: Wadham House looks like a beaut fill-in venue, especially on the first Tuesday evening (for the moment).

See you all at Amaroo tonight.
