Australian Games Expo - Canberra JANUARY 24-26

Post by gregor » Wed Nov 26, 2008 12:40 pm

http://austgamesexpo.com/

So it's been moved to the Australia Day weekend, and it's in Canberra.

Who's going? How are you getting there? Where will you stay?

I was thinking train, but it turns out you can't there from here :(

Wow, not Albury...

In the "old days" I used to train to Albury/Wodonga and link to a coach for the rest of the trip to Canberra.

So are people going to go whatever?

Anyone interested in a boycott to get it moved back to June in Albury???

I haven't decided about going yet, that's why I asked the question.

I don't know that a boycott would do anything-- but I have no idea what the rationale behind the decision is. Seems odd to change the time of year.

If lots of gamers from all over the country want to go to Cancon, then I want to be there too to play with them. If they all want to go to Albury in June, that's better for me.[/i]

Wow, the biggest war-game convention combined with the biggest euro convention?

I would never miss Cancon, I'll be there "competing" in the ASL tournament. I'm pretty sure Anna and Ryan would be going, especially if AGE is there too.

Gaming overload!

I have publicly asked Sasha about the reasons for the change on BGG.

Train/Coach to Canberra (roughly 8 hours):
http://www.countrylink.info/timetables/ ... anberra_to

Bus to Canberra (roughly 8.5 hours). Greyhound have a similar service. $60-80+ each way.
http://www.albury.net.au/~tim/businter.htm

Might be cheaper to FLY!

UPDATE: You can get a Virginblue flight to Canberra for $90 each way. Flight time is 1.5 hours. Not too bad. Entry to AGE will now be free so that's essentially $30 off the airfare making it $150.

You could wait for a sale and airfares might come down to $40-50 each way.

Or carpool.

Hi,

Thought I'd let you in on the reasons for the changes to the expo.

There were a number of possibilities floating around as to what would happen with the expo this year:

1. Straight move to Canberra - same dates
2. Combine with GenConOz - move to Brisbane.
3. Change Hands and move to Sydney.

In the end the last 2 dead ended and Phil decided to go it alone again in Canberra in June. Provided he could find enough sponsorship. That unfortunately did not happen. The result - NO MORE EXPO.

The manager of Mind Games Canberra told him it would be a shame to see it disappear and suggested combining it with CanCon, which as you know is what has happenned.

Apart from the inconvenience of the change of date and the short notice, I think it will still be a great weekend. Giles and the Rio Grande team will be there again as will Z-Man games (although no Zev) and for those that want a bargain. Milsims have some great prices at CanCon.

Last year we were able to Game in the venue till about 10 or 11. (Which is when the MtG winds up, so hopefully that will still be the same.)

Admittedly this year the expo part of the con will be considerably smaller, but that shouldn't overly affect gamers, bearing in mind that the main concept of the expo is to draw in the general public. In 2010 it will be much bigger, an entire new hall becomes available, which is double or more the size of the Albury venue.

I'll end my rambling there. If you have any more questions I'll try and answer them.

Oh and I imagine that we may see a Bordercon in Albury on the June longweekend now, so you can still come to up here to get your gaming fix.

Cheers

Sacha.

Thanks for clarification Sascha.

Will try to go even on short notice! Hope it goes well and that things pick up next year. Bargains aside, AGE is a great chance for me to catch up with interstate gamers who I might only see once a year!

Thanks Sacha.

Boardgaming is too small a niche here in Australia; If you want to do something positive like put on a con (or run a gaming website!), don't expect positive cash-flow; Do it for the love of the hobby!

Just posted some info on the Geek thread about possible accommodation sharing, so if anyone from Melbourne is interested, check it out.

The problem is actually that it butts right up against our beach holiday - so oto get there, we'd have to fly, and even at $90 each way that's $720 ... plus family accommodation, meals, [-]drinks[/-], shipping in a babysitter, ... -- if we could have driven, it wouldn't have been such a nightmare of logistics.

And then there's *next* year's Essen, of course ...
