Longest game?

Post by Forper » Wed Nov 02, 2011 11:41 pm

whats the longest game you have ever played? I had Flat Top set up on my parents dining table for a month during summer holidays when I was a kid. I played out land battles on the Flat Top map using advanced squad leader. Made special rules for amphibious landings etc. I played against myself because I didn't have any friends that were interested in such detailed record keeping (fuel and bombs). It was basically WWII in the pacific from beginning to end. At one stage allied infantry got within kms of the Emporers Palace but then the allies lost at sea and they were stranded just like Guadalcanal. In the end I think Japan was close to winning the theatre but luckily I had to go back to school and they never actually got total victory. I was thinking about making rules for nukes by that stage too but never got around to it.

Personally?

In terms of continuous hours: Avalon Hill Civilization(with all the trimmings) 18 hrs

Kingmaker went maybe 10hr

at my club a single game of TFG's Federation and Empire went on for 3-4 years@ 6-10hr/month (with copious spreadsheetery and diplomacy/strategizing in between)

The longest completed game I have played was a club game of Empire in Arms played 4-7 hours a session, every three weeks for 18 months with a 6 week break over christmas. We finished all 120 turns of a 1792 variant campaign game played with full 7 players ( one who was replaced by another after 12 turns). This was played early-mid 1997 till end of 1998. Fantastic game ! Full of twist and turns. Spain gained Dominance at one point, supported by Great Britain, Russia, Prussia and Turkey

Another EiA game ran for from Oct 2004 till late 2007 and petered out with about 20-24 turns to go after playing out about 100 turns. This was with seven sets of players (paired up in case one could not make a session) and playing once a month 4-5 hours per session. Another Federation and Empire campaign game started Feb 1999 and was still going till mid 2006 when it also petered out.

In one sitting, Mahjong would be my longest period, 11 am till 1 am, with breaks for lunch and dinner :-)

Single game? Like Doc, it was Empires in Arms. In the early 90s we played weekly: every Saturday, 10-6, for about 3 months. Then we'd take a break for a couple of months, then do it again. I think we played about 5 games in two years with a fairly consistent roster. They were around 100 hours.

Longest single session of one game would be ~12hrs (plus lunch and dinner breaks) - this was World in Flames. Pretty much the same set of players as above.

In the tournament and convention scene long days are common - although you usually play quite a few different games. When ConQuest RPG convention started they held "midnight madness" sessions in the gym that started at 9pm and ran all night, with people crashing out on the tumbling mats (horrible to sleep on). I recall an all-night mix of Kremlin, Junta and Nuclear War after playing DnD and Traveller all day. Fuelled by Coke and Mars Bars :( 9am-11pm is common at Arcanacon and Conquest still. My personal longest day's play is around 16 hours. At Bordercon this year Erin and I started play at about 10am and finished after 2 the next morning. There were several groups who played even longer...

Pity the poor organiser who's job was to go around waking up sleeping gamers and informing them that for safety and hygiene reasons they weren't allowed to sleep on site - those were the days.
Power tends to isolate those who hold too much of it. Eventually, they lose touch with reality... and fall.

A small number of us managed to build a little fort out of mats and slept unnoticed for about three hours, then got another couple of hours sleep in someone's car.
