ASL next Wednesday (23-Aug-06)

Post by bsmith » Fri Aug 18, 2006 12:02 pm

Hey guys.

For those of you involved in the ASL group, we should have roughly 4-6 people playing next week.

Scenario
The first scenario will be Gavin Take(T1) from ASL Classic. It's freely available from MMP's site:

http://www.melbournegamers.com/files/ScenarioT1.pdf

It's about as simple an ASL scenario as you will find, very few squads and just enough funky terrain to test your LOS skills. Also, there are no sniper numbers to remember.
The plan is to get two games going side-by-side, that way I can walk all players through each phase and explain it to everyone as we go. The scenario will work well with three players. One plays the defending Germans, one plays Gavin's force which enters on Turn 1, the other plays the Ostberg force which also enters on Turn 1. The experienced players will play the Germans.

Gear
All we need to play Gavin Take is Beyond Valor and Yanks. We will have more than enough counters so there's no trouble with gear.

Rules
I would appreciate if everyone would read the Line of Sight rules so please attempt to read:
Line of Sight(LOS) (All of A6)
Hills (All of B10)
Buildings (B21.1 - B23.31)

The Map
There's a hill and a bunch of multi-story buildings. Try to get a handle on how LOS works along hills and over single story buildings. It's a little tricky to figure out blind hexes but with practice it eventually becomes second nature.
If you want to check a few LOS cases the best way is to install VASL and create a new game with Map 3. Choose a source and destination hex and try to figure out for yourself whether there is a clear LOS. Then test it with the LOS tool, it works really well.

I think that covers most stuff. Most important; ask heaps of questions!

In case I hadn't confirmed, I'm in. I'll try and read some rules before then to start climbing the learning curve.

Questions:
Are you okay for components?
Where is the meet taking place, and what time?

The guys at TGV will have a new copy of BV by next week so there's nothing you need to bring except your rulebook Doug.

It'll be at 7pm at The Games Village in Hawthorn. Is your mate coming along too?

Thanks Ben. I'm not sure about Roger, I'll send him the link to this thread.

Cheers.
I want to try for 6 players if possible, the more we have learning at the same rate the better.

I know Anna well enough to know that "might try it this weekend" has a totally different meaning to "when are we going to try it?" and "what do you want to play tonight?"

"this weekend" is an Annarism for "when we've run out of other games to play and there's nothing on TV and the sun has turned into a red dwarf"

Well since we've already planned Thurn and Taxis, Carcassonne and Goa for tonight and we're busy tomorrow it's not certain we can fit it in right??

Sigh... which is the lesser of the 2 evils? :p
You still owe me 3 games from Intrigue last time.

For anyone who has looked at the scenario, you'll note that the large building has the stairwell rubbled (hex M2). This means the first and second level of the building may not be accessed.

For those of you following this thread for a laugh, myself and Anna did get through one entire turn of ASL Starter Kit Scenario #1. That was Friday night and it's now Sunday. The game is still setup on the table and waiting for turn 2
