diplomacy rules

Post by dougp » Mon Jun 26, 2006 11:47 am

The full rules are availible here

A summary of the rules:

There are fleets and armies.
There are provinces/regions/spaces.
There are ocean spaces and land spaces.
Fleets can be on costal spaces or ocean spaces, armies can be on land spaces.
Only one unit can be in a space at a time.
Some land spaces have dots/supply centres.
You can support one unit for each supply centre you own.
If you get 18/34 supply centres, you win (solo victory).

Play follows the following pattern

Spring movement
Spring retreats
Fall movement
Fall retreats
Supply centre evalutation
Builds and disbands
Repeat

In movement, you issue an order to each of your units. The possible orders are:
1. Hold (ie do nothing)

example:
F LON H
ie fleet london holds.

2. Move to an adjacent valid province
A fleet on a costal province can move along the coast. Fleet london can move to yorkshire. Note also that a fleet in venice can't move to tuscany, it would have to go around, via apulia, naples and rome.

example 1
England
F LON -> NTH
ie fleet london to north sea

example 2
Austria
A VIE -> GAL

Russia
A WAR -> GAL

Note that in this case, both units would enter galicia with equal force (ie a force of 1), so they would bounce out and return to their original positions. It is possible to move into a space with a force greater than one, see next point.

3. Support a unit to move.
If a unit can move into a space, it can support a unit to hold or move into that space.

example 1 support to hold
Austria
A VIE S BUD
ie Army Vienna supports budapest

example 2
Austria
A VIE S BUD -> GAL
A BUD -> GAL

Russia
A WAR -> GAL

In this example, Army budapest enters galacia with a force of 2, army warsaw enters with a force of 1, so budapest will get in. You must enter a province with greater force to claim it, you must hold a province with equal force to hold it.

A unit that gets attacked cannot offer support (unless it is supporting a move on the unit that attacked it). This is refered to as cutting support.

4. Convoy armies over water with fleets.
England Spring 1901
F LON -> NTH
A LVP -> YOR

England Fall 1901
F NTH C YOR -> NWY
A YOR -> NWY

This will put the english army in norway in two moves. You can use as many chained fleets to convoy as you like. Fleets have to be at sea to convoy, they can't convoy if they are on land. If there is a problem with the convoy, ie one of the fleets gets successfully attacked, the convoy fails.

So, that's the possible orders you can issue to your units. All orders for all units on the board are evaluated simultaneously. Also, you can support and convoy other player's units, but you can't dislodge yourself.

After movement, any units that were successfully attacked (refered to as being dislodged) are retreated. Units may retreat into an adjacent space except for the one the attack came from, and except for any space in which there was a bounce in the previous turn. Dislodged units may also be removed from the board.

After retreats in fall, ownership of supply centers is evaluated. Being in a supply centre in spring is not sufficient to claim ownership.

Then comes builds and disbands. If you have more supply centres than units, you can build more units on your home supply centres. Obviously fleets can only be built on coastal spaces. Builds may be waived. It is possible you have builds which you can't use because your home supply centres are occupied by either your own, or a foreign powers units.

THE END!

Any questions? I'm sure I've missed some vital bits.

If you go to here you can play the game using the web interface, which is pretty straight forward. There is also an email interface described here. Even if you play with the web interface, you will get press (messages from other players) and notifications of turn results by email.

Also note if you have played before but not by email
In email games, you must fully specify convoy orders, and you may negotiate at all times, including during retreats and builds phases.

named coasts

Post by dougp » Mon Jun 26, 2006 2:12 pm

Another thing...

Fleets in Saint Petersburg must either be on the north coast (which is adjacent to barents sea and norway) or the south coast (which is adjacent to livonia, gulf of bothnia and finland).

Fleets in spain must be on the north coast (adjacent to portugal, mid atlantic and gascony) or south coast (adjacent to mid atlantic, western mediteranian, gulf of lyon, and marseilles.

Fleets in Bulgaria bust be on the east cost (adjacent to constantinople, rumania and the black sea) or the south coast (adjacent to constantinople, greece, and the aegean sea).

Note that MAO -> SPA and CON -> BUL are ambiguous for fleets. You have to write MAO -> SPA/SC or MAO -> SPA/NC, and CON -> BUL/EC or CON -> BUL/SC.

Fleets in these split provinces still take up the whole space.

Also...

Fleets and armies can be in/move through CON, DEN and KIE, but you cannot convoy through there. Kiel doesn't have named coasts, there is a canal which enables fleets to move from the Helgoland Bight to Kiel, and from Kiel to the Baltic Sea.

I've moved the current map state to the original post. You should all know how to get to these images by now anyway!

Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone is interested in taking over from England in our Diplomacy game. You can see from the chart that England's position is a little precarious but I'm sure with your good Diplomacy skills you should be able to negotiate some leniancy from other players while you regain your footing :D

Let me know if you're interested.

Anyone know how to change a registered email address?

Post by randy » Fri Jul 14, 2006 12:55 pm

Hi,
You probably all know by now that I'm not recieving any dpjudge emails.

I've turned off junk mail filtering, but still no mail.
So I want to change my registered email address. The dpjudge site does not appear to have such a facility.

Does anyone know if its possible?

Hey Randell,

you need to go here: http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/?variant=dppd and sign in.

Then add you new address

Now send an email using the 'set address' command:

SIGNON england@dockersgame YOURPASSWORD
SET ADDRESS newAddress
SIGNOFF

I believe this should work (hopefully)

Cheers, Paul
